Tho Tho's Story of Resilience
Tho Tho, the eldest of eight, lived in a cramped stilt house over dirty water in one of Yangon’s slums.
With her mother battling diabetes and the family grappling with crippling debt, Tho Tho dropped out of school to care for her siblings.
When medical bills forced them to borrow from a loan shark, the family faced eviction.
Desperate, they accepted an agent’s offer of a high-paying factory job for Tho Tho in a neighboring country. The promised job turned out to be a nightmare. Tho Tho was trafficked, sold to an older couple, and subjected to rape and forced labor.
Despite the horror, she devised a plan to escape, secretly knotting scraps of cloth into a rope. One night, she used it to flee the third-floor prison and ran until she found help.
However, her ordeal continued as she spent six months in prison while awaiting repatriation.
Upon her return to Myanmar, she received trauma counseling and vocational training from our partner center.
Her incredible resilience and patience in crafting her escape rope inspired everyone at our partner center.
Tho Tho’s story is a testament to her unyielding focus on freedom despite immense suffering and daily abuses.
