Fan's Story of Resilience
Fan skillfully and confidently works on her customer’s hair, bringing joy both to herself and the woman in the chair, who praises the beauty of the finished look. As she glances at the clock, Fan feels content knowing there are many more customers to come, and she wishes time could stand still so she could fully enjoy her fulfilling work at the salon, where making others feel beautiful brings her great happiness.
Fan reflects on past moments associated with clocks, contrasting them with her present. Three years ago, she was in a brothel just two blocks away, anxiously watching a clock that seemed to move agonizingly slow while she was trafficked and trapped. She would sit in distress, feeling isolated and hoping each tick and tock would eventually bring relief. Her past was marked by hardship, including being forced to leave school and falling into exploitation by a deceitful partner. It was in that brothel, as she watched the clock, that our partner center's team first met her.
Our partner center's encounter with Fan at the brothel, under the watchful eye of the Madam, led them to give her a Christmas gift and their Outreach contact information. A few weeks later, Fan reached out, eager to leave the brothel after recalling our mention of a jewelry-making job, which appealed to her passion for handicrafts.
Globally, an estimated 49.6 million people are enslaved, similar to Fan's past situation. Ideally, a just system would function like a well-oiled clock, with all components working harmoniously towards justice and freedom. However, Outreach frequently observes the dysfunction and corruption in the justice system, particularly in the so-called "Justice District" where systemic barriers prevent true justice. This area, named "Justice Street" locally, is marked by an oppressive blend of high-security jails and silent religious institutions. Historically, a group of women established the Door of Hope to offer refuge to those escaping brothels, a legacy that inspires our ongoing efforts to address systemic failures and bring real change to these broken systems.
After graduating from our partner center's holistic program, Fan successfully transitioned to a career at a hair salon and became a trainer, teaching young women jewelry-making skills. Her transformation also extended to helping others; she recently brought her trafficked 17-year-old cousin to the partner center for support.
Fan’s journey underscores the ongoing need to address systemic issues, with millions still trapped in modern slavery and areas like the Justice District failing to deliver true justice. Purchasing items from this collection supports our continued efforts to address these issues, providing hope and assistance to women like Fan and contributing to the fight for a more effective justice system.
